A beautiful modern interior isn’t always about matching everything perfectly. In fact, some of the most inviting spaces come from mixing different materials—soft upholstery against wood, polished metal beside natural stone, or transparent glass paired with something warm and tactile.

The key is finding the right balance. At HomeyHome, many of our favourite European furniture brands approach materials differently, making it easy to create a space that feels layered, personal and considered.

Start with Warm Wood

Wood is one of the easiest ways to bring warmth into a contemporary interior.

Brands such as Calligaris, Pianca and Miniforms use wood in very different ways, from clean architectural dining tables to sculptural pieces that highlight natural grain and texture.

If your space already includes cooler materials such as glass, ceramic or metal, adding a wood dining table, sideboard or coffee table can immediately make the room feel softer and more grounded.

Balance Structure with Softness

A room filled entirely with hard surfaces can feel visually cold, which is why upholstery plays such an important role.

A fabric or leather sofa from Natuzzi Italia, Ditre Italia or Nicoline creates a softer foundation for the living room. From there, contrasting materials can be introduced through coffee tables, side tables and storage.

Try pairing a soft neutral sofa with a ceramic coffee table, or warm leather with a sleek metal piece. The contrast is often what makes each material stand out.

Add Metal, Glass & Reflective Details

Metal and glass can bring a lighter, more architectural quality to a room.

The modular metal structure of USM can create a clean contrast against softer furniture, while Tom Dixon lighting introduces reflective metallic finishes and sculptural forms. Transparent and glossy pieces from Kartell can also add visual interest without making a room feel heavy.

You don't need much—one or two contrasting pieces are often enough to change the character of the space.

Finish with Smaller Details

Layering doesn't stop with furniture.

A Georg Jensen object, CULTI diffuser or Trudon candle can introduce another material, finish or texture on a coffee table or sideboard. These smaller elements help connect larger furniture pieces and make the room feel more complete.

The goal isn't to use every material at once. Choose a few that complement each other, repeat them subtly throughout the room, and allow some contrast.

Create Your Own Mix at HomeyHome

The most interesting interiors rarely come from one collection or one material. Combining wood, upholstery, ceramic, glass and metal creates depth while allowing each piece to have its own character.
